How is Philips Lumea different from professional hair removal treatment?

Published on 12 March 2024

If you would like to find out how Philips Lumea is different from professional hair removal treatments, you can find your answer here.

Professional IPL treatment vs at home treatment with Philips Lumea

The technology that Philips Lumea uses is based on IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), which is also used in professional salons. We have adapted this technology for safe and effective use at home.

The IPL technology works by heating up the pigment (melanin) in the hair and hair root underneath the skin. This stimulates the hair follicle to go into a resting phase. This causes hair to shed naturally and inhibits further hair growth.

Salons use a very high-intensity light for this procedure, which can be painful. Whereas, the flashes released by Philips Lumea are much gentler. However, both treatments give the same hair removal results.

100% permanent hair removal is highly unlikely, regardless whether you use IPL at your home or at a salon. You will always require regular maintenance to keep your skin fully hair-free.

IPL vs. Laser hair removal treatment

Laser technology is another popular method of hair removal. While IPL creates a broader spectrum of light (like a photoflash), a laser emits a single beam of light (like a laser pointer). Hence, laser treatment is considered more painful than IPL.

Also, laser hair removal technology requires a longer treatment time. This is because the treatment window size is smaller than on IPL devices.
